Persimmon trees are grown most widely in areas that have moderate summers and winters. The tree is native to China, but it is cultivated for its fruit across the world. Persimmon trees can reach around 25 feet in height if properly tended and taken care of. Given the right amount of water, light and fertilizer as well as proper temperatures and soil, persimmon trees are remarkably easy to grow. The fruit they provide can be used in cooking everything from various breads to desserts.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure
  • 10-10-10 fertilizer
  1. Step 1

Measure the diameter of the trunk at ground level. You will need to have one pound of fertilizer per inch of trunk diameter.

  2. Step 2

Purchase a 10-10-10 fertilizer. The numbers refer to the percentages of nitrogen, phosphate and potash contained in the fertilizer. Using a fertilizer with too much nitrogen in it can cause the persimmon tree's fruit to drop prematurely, so it is important to choose one that is chemically balanced.

  3. Step 3

The fertilizer should be used once a year, either in late winter or early spring. Spread the fertilizer evenly beneath the canopy and around the base of the tree so that the soil will be enriched above the roots of the persimmon tree.

  4. Step 4

Apply fertilizer a second time if an adult tree shows signs of nutrient deficiency, such as wilting yellow or light green leaves. Infant plants and persimmon trees that are less than one year old should receive particular care.
