Unilever says new milkshake helps control appetite

GENEVA (Reuters) - A new weight loss drink that tastes like a milkshake significantly reduces appetite and could soon join Unilever's $400 million Slim-Fast weight-loss brand, the company's researchers said on Wednesday.
ADVERTISEMENT

A study showed that the drink, which works by trapping gas in foods to make people feel full, worked even better than the company's Slim-Fast weight-loss drink, they said.

The researchers, who presented their findings at the 2008 European Congress on Obesity, said the company has patented the technology.

"The technology is now available for the brand to use in future formats," said David Mela, a Unilever nutritionist who worked on the study. "The food maintains the bulk, much of which is air that helps you maintain that full feeling."

Obesity is a big problem and big business. About 400 million people are classified as obese, putting them at higher risk of diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart diseases, according to the World Health Organization.

This has in part spurred companies like Unilever, Kraft Foods, General Mills, Sara Lee and others to turn to healthier products with a whole range of so-called health and wellness foods.

"If you look at western populations, a (large number) of adults are overweight," said Gert Meijer, an executive at Unilever's research and development division. "In terms of the amount of people who might be interested in this product, it could be huge."

In the Unilever study, the researchers tested their milkshake on 24 volunteers who were given either the new drink or a serving of regular Slim-Fast at breakfast.

People who had the milkshake reported that they were significantly fuller when asked at different intervals over a four-hour time period. The researchers found that a half-sized serving of the milkshake also suppressed hunger.

"We are clearly talking about hours," said Sergei Melnikov, a physical chemist who helped develop the technology. "It is an effect that lasts for an hour or two or longer."

The milkshake is designed to trap gas in the food after consumption, preventing it from dissolving in the mouth as happens with foods like whipped cream, and cutting appetite.

To do this the team engineered the fats, proteins and fibers in the food until reaching the right mix to trap the gas -- a technology that might appear in other Unilever foods, the researchers said.

"I would say this is not limited to liquids," Melnikov said. "It could be used in other food forms."

Men Need More Fruits and Vegetables a Day

Do you know that men need to eat more fruits and vegetables than women?

The National 5 A Day program is encouraging men, who have greater health risks than women for some diseases, to shoot for nine servings offruits and vegetables each day and women to aim for seven servings a day.

Fruits and vegetables contain many powerful and important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber and disease-fighting phytochemicals, and that helps reduce the risk of many cancers, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Why do men need more than women?

The recommended servings are greater for men because more than two-thirds of men are overweight or obese, and men have a higher death rate for certain diseases than women.

Those diseases include:

Cardiovascular disease (1 times greater)
* Lung cancer (About two times as high)
Colorectal cancer (1 times greater)

Among Americans, at least 58 million have some form of cardiovascular disease, including high blood pressure, and 8.2 million Americans have a history of cancer.

How much equals one serving?

* cup fruit juice
* 1 medium banana
* 1 cup chopped or diced raw vegetables
* 1 medium apple
* cup cooked vegetables
* cup dried fruit
* cup cooked beans or peas

One serving of fruit or vegetables should fit in the palm of your hand. It's a lot smaller than most people think.

How can you increase your intake of fruits and vegetables?

* Have fresh fruit in the morning
* Snack on fresh fruit throughout the day
* Eat a big salad at lunch
* Snack on raw vegetables with a healthful dip
* Eat at least two vegetables with dinner
* Add beans and peas to salads

The Cancer Fighter in Your Kitchen Cabinet

by Joy Bauer, M.S., R.D., C.D.N.

Vitamin D is a powerful nutrient. Compelling research has shown it can reduce the risk of several medical conditions, including osteoporosis, gum disease, diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and YES, even certain cancers.

Here are three things you can do to ensure you're getting enough.

1. Incorporate vitamin D-rich food into your diet

* Wild salmon
* Atlantic mackerel
* Sardines
* Shrimp
* Skim and 1% milk
* Soy milk (vitamin D-fortified)
* Shiitake mushrooms
* Vitamin D-fortified yogurts (like Dannon Light & Fit)
* Vitamin D-fortified cereals (like Multigrain Cheerios, Post Bran Flakes, or Kashi Vive)

2. Consider supplements

Because there are limited food sources for vitamin D, it's a good idea to consider supplements. As always, check with your personal physician before taking anything new.

* Take a multivitamin that provides at least the Daily Value, 400 IUs.
* For women taking extra calcium: Buy a brand that also provides Vitamin D -- optimally D3 (cholcalciferol), the most potent form. Two good brands are Citracal Plus D and Minerals and Caltrate 600-D Plus Minerals.
* For men who want to take additional Vitamin D: Look for a supplement that provides 400 to 1000 IUs of D3, also called cholcalciferol. NOTE: Men should not take supplemental calcium (some research suggests excessive calcium may increase the risk for prostate concerns).

3. Enjoy "a little" safe sun

Our bodies produce their own vitamin D through exposure to sunlight. However, too much sun can damage the skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. Speak with your dermatologist about the safest way to get some sun. All you need is about 15 to 20 minutes a few times a week (optimally before 10 AM and after 2 PM). Remember to wear sunglasses and a rimmed hat to protect your eyes and face.

Lots of fruit, vegetables don't stop breast cancer

By Will Dunham

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A diet extra heavy in fruit and vegetables was no better than one with the standard recommended amounts in preventing the recurrence of breast cancer, a study released on Tuesday found.

The study tracked 3,088 U.S. women. Half followed a diet with the widely recommended five daily servings of vegetables and fruit. The other half ate a diet doubling that intake.

The women, all of whom had been treated successfully for early-stage breast cancer, participated in the study from 1995 to 2000 at seven places in California, Texas, Arizona and Oregon. They were followed for between six and 11 years.

The findings, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, come amid a debate among experts over the influence of diet on cancer.

The researchers called this the largest study of its kind to assess how diet affects breast cancer recurrence and said the results were quite definitive.

"I was surprised and disappointed," Marcia Stefanick of Stanford University in California, one of the researchers, said in a telephone interview. "I think we believed that by eating real food and nutrient-dense food, we were going to come up with a different outcome, but we didn't."

FDA says tomatoes unlikely to cut cancer risk

WASHINGTON (AFP) - There is no strong link between eating lycopene, the antioxidant that gives tomatoes their red color, and a reduced risk of certain cancers, the US government's Food and Drug Administrationsaid Tuesday.
ADVERTISEMENT

The FDA's review, which appears in the July 10 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, refutes numerous studies which have pointed to a link between ingesting lycopene and cutting cancer risk.

The "analysis found no credible evidence that lycopene, either in food or in a dietary supplement, was associated with reduced risk of any of the cancers evaluated," according to chief researcher Claudine Kavanaugh.

The review "found no evidence that tomatoes reduced the risk of lung, colorectal, breast, cervical or endometrial cancer."

However, the report did point to "very limited evidence for associations between tomato consumption and reduced risk of prostate, ovarian, gastric and pancreatic cancers."

Edward Giovannucci of the Harvard School of Public Health said in an accompanying editorial that the field of research remains promising, even if it is too early to point to a definitive relationship between consuming lycopene and lowering the risk of some cancers.

"Although it may be premature to espouse increased consumption of tomato sauce or lycopene for prostate cancer provention, this area of research remains promising," Giovannucci said.

The FDA undertook the review of 145 studies after a coalition of tomato-growers and tomato-product processors asked permission to include label information about the anti-cancer benefits of tomatoes.

Herbal traditions

Herbal teas have been used for centuries to help control weight, based on supposed properties, such as effects on metabolism, appetite or even by directly dissolving fat. For example, the Mongolians have long believed that drinking green tea will help them to lose excess fat.

They even claim that rubbing the used tea leaves on the skin can show its 'grease-cutting' properties. Meanwhile, fennel seed tea has been used by people in Italy for centuries to help suppress the appetite. Chinese traditional medicine also recommends the use of herbal teas for weight loss.

Several African herbal slimming teas claim to reduce water retention, remove toxins from the lymphatic system (and so break down cellulite), cleanse the excretory system through use of a mild laxative, and curb the appetite. Like some Chinese teas, these African preparations often contain senna leaves. Senna has a purging effect, but this is no way to diet. It only temporarily reduces weight, can remove excessive amounts of fluid and may cause powerful stomach cramps.

Is cheese a good source of protein?

Cheese is a good source of protein, but so what? Most Americans get more than enough protein. A much larger problem is that we get too much saturated fat, which raises blood cholesterol and contributes to heart disease, the nation's No. 1 killer. A grilled cheese sandwich made with 1 1/2 oz. of cheddar cheese provides 10 grams of protein (about 20% of a 150-lb. person's daily needs) but also 9 grams of saturated fat (about 40% of the upper limit for a person who consumes 2,000 calories a day). Low-fat and fat-free dairy is a better bet.

Cacao, Used to make Cocoa and Chocolate

The word cacao itself derives from the Nahuatl (Aztec language) word cacahuatl, learned at the the time of the conquest when it was first encountered by the Spanish.

Its seeds are used to make cocoa and chocolate. Chocolates comprises of number of raw and processed foods that originate from the seed of the tropical cacao tree. Made from the fermented, roasted, and ground beans taken from the pod of the tropical cacao tree. The resulting products are known as "chocolate" or, in some parts of the world, cocoa.

The three main varieties of cacao beans used in chocolate are Criollo, Forastero and Trinitario.

Criollo is the rarest and most expensive cocoa on the market.
Forastero is a large group of wild and cultivated cacaos, are typically big in classic "chocolate" flavour.
Trinitario a natural hybrid of Criollo and Forastero

Chocolate contains a variety of substances, some of which are addictive, such as caffeine. These include:

Sugar - Chocolate bars (as opposed to cocoa) contain large amounts of sugar.
Theobromine - This is the primary alkaloid found in cocoa and chocolate, and is one of the causes for chocolate's mood-elevating effects.
Anandamide - An endogenous cannabinoid.
Tryptophan - An essential amino acid that is a precursor to serotonin, an important neurotransmitter involved in regulating moods.
Phenethylamine - An endogenous amphetamine. Often described as a 'love chemical'. However, it is quickly metabolized by the enzyme MAO-B, preventing significant concentrations from reaching the brain.
Caffeine - This stimulant is present mainly in coffee and tea. Exists in chocolate in very small amounts.

Medical applications

According to Mars-funded researchers at Harvard, the University of California, and European universities, cocoa-based prescription drugs could potentially help treat diabetes, dementia and other diseases. Research indicates that chocolate may be effective atpreventing persistent coughing. The ingredient theobromine was found to be almost %u2153 more effective than codeine, the leading cough medicine. The chocolate also appears to soothe and moisten the throat. There is a popular belief that the consumption ofchocolate can cause acne. Pure chocolate contains anti-oxidants which aid better skin

Sweet Oranges

Orange - specifically, sweet orange-refers to the citrus tree Citrus sinensisand its fruit. The orange is a hybrid of ancient cultivated origin, possibly between pomelo and tangerine.

The word "orange" ultimately comes from Sanskrit narang or Tamil"naraththai". Oranges originated in southeast Asia, in either India, Vietnam or southern China.

Oranges are widely grown in warm climates worldwide, and the flavours of orange vary from sweet to sour. The fruit is commonly peeled and eaten fresh, or squeezed for its juice. It is also used in certain recipes as flavouring or a garnish.

Oranges are rich in vitamins and minerals such as carbohydrates fat, protein, vitamin B12, vitamin B2, acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B9, vitamin C, calcium, ion, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.

Lady's Finger Flowering Plant

Okra or lady's finger, a flowerng plant in the family of Malvacae. It originates at Ethiopia.

The word Okra came from West Africa and is cognates with "ókùrù" in Igbo, a language spoken in what is now known as Nigeria.

The plant grows about 2 m tall, its has leaves growing 10-20 cm long with 5-7 lobes. The flowers are 4-8 cm in diameter, petals are commonly white and yellow often with red or purple spot at the base of the petal. The fruit is a capsule about 5-50 cm long with numerous seeds.

In regards with the nutrients, okra is rich in calories, protein, carbohydrates, fats and vibers. Vitamins and minerals include vitamin C, folate, vitamin A, magnesium, calcium.

Veganism

Donald Watson started it all. He is the inventor of the word vegan.Vegan taken from the word vegetarian. The word was decided together with his wife by taking the first three letters and last two letters of 'vegetarian'

His story begun when he was young at the farm of his uncle. When he witness and responded to the harshness and brutality which he observe in the industrial and farming community. He was surrounded by interesting animals and finding out the purpose of each one. And when he saw a pig slaughtered he realize what purpose the pigs served and his life changed. At the age of 14 he bacame vegetarian as a new years resulotion.

Being a vegan then is the one that does not consume or use of animal products. People bacame vegans because they have concern for animal rights and environments and also perceived health benefits, and spiritual concerns.

As far as I know, vegans avoids consuming animal products from ingredients to by-products. Some avoid food cooked with the equipment thats has been used to cook non-vegan foods. Another thing was that they avoid toothpaste with calcium extracted from animal bones, if they are aware of it. Being vegan requires hardwork and deternination.

According to American Diet Association vegetarian diets offer a number of nutritional benefits, including lower levels of saturated fat, cholesterol, and animal protein as well as higher levels of carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, potassium, folate, and antioxidants such as vitamins C and E and phytochemicals. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says that one small scale study has observed that a vegan diet can reduce blood cholesterol in people with, and significantly reduce the complications of Type 2 diabetes.[27] Likewise properly planned vegan diet presents no significant nutritional problems. But they are potentially at risk for being deficient in nutrients such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, iodine and omega-3 fatty acids and this is mostly taken from animals.

Acne Cures

Many unfortunate people between the ages of twelve and twenty four suffer from acne. It's uncomfortable and embarrassing. Boys tend to fall victim to it more than girls at the onset of puberty, probably because of the increased level of the hormone testosterone in the body. Acne is generally caused by bacteria filling up clogged pores, resulting in zits breaking out. The zits usually spread over the face, back, shoulders, chest and neck. Some doctors think it may be hereditary. There is a plethora of advice when it comes to acne cures.

It may not be possible to prevent the acne but you may be able to lessen its effects. If all measures fail, it's time to decide on which of the acne cures to try. There are numerous gels, lotions, creams and solutions on the market. Benzoyl Peroxide is a common ingredient in over the counter medications and some people have found that it works very well, especially when combined with regular cleansing and moisturizing. Other acne cures are antibiotics, salicylic acid and sulfur.

Other people prefer to try vitamins or natural herbal remedies. These are all easily available as acne cures. Vitamin A and Niacin is recommended, and also Zinc tablets. There are a number of home remedies that you could try. Some sufferers apply orange peel crushed with water or lemon juice. Another acne cure is coriander or mint juice mixed with a little bit of turmeric powder. Others apply grated cucumber leaves or crushed garlic cloves. You could also try an overnight face mask made from mashed up fenugreek leaves, to be washed off when you wake next day. Tea Tree Oil is said to be another acne cure. You can also bathe in a soothing hot tub of Epsom Salts.

Whichever method you decide to use, don't undo the benefits of your acne cures by picking at the skin. Also, don't make it worse by scrubbing at the acne with any harsh material.

* cup fruit juice
* 1 medium banana
* 1 cup chopped or diced raw vegetables
* 1 medium apple
* cup cooked vegetables
* cup dried fruit

* Wild salmon
* Atlantic mackerel
* Sardines
* Shrimp
* Skim and 1% milk
* Soy milk (vitamin D-fortified)
* Shiitake mushrooms
